Keith Dambrot: Full Court 1-2-1-1 Pressure Defense & Breakdown Drills

Duquesne University head coach Keith Dambrot has an impressive resume that includes coaching LeBron James in high school and winning 21 or more games for 12 consecutive seasons while the head coach at Akron University.

In this presentation, Coach Dambrot shares his smothering, full-court pressure defense. Being able to press gives teams the ability to control tempo, play catch-up if needed, and play more players. This video gives you the opportunity to learn pressure defense from one of the best mid-major coaches in the country. Dambrot won five MAC East Division titles and three MAC tournaments and was the conference’s Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2017.

Using a whole-part-whole approach, Coach Dambrot talks about the main elements involved and gets into the rules for any trapping system. He discusses structure, alignments, and responsibilities for all players in the full-court press.

    Executing Full Court Pressure Defense

Coach Dambrot then goes on the court to demonstrate the strategy behind his full-court diamond press. He breaks it all down into eight components:

    • Trapping
    • Fundamentals
    • Anticipation fundamentals
    • Positioning
    • Flicking
    • Run back
    • Transition defense
    • Outnumbered situations

In addition, Coach Dambrot gets into the 2-1-2 press and discusses trapping angles, responsibilities, and overall alignment within both the “Base” and “Blitz” packages. Also addressed are defensive adjustments when facing a three-player offense compared to a four-player offense.

To secure a late-game inbounds opportunity, Coach Dambrot demonstrates three plays to use against man-to-man full-court pressure defense. Each play has a deep option and each also has a safe option using different screening actions to get the ball inbounds. Dambrot also shows you a set for taking on a 1-3-1 half-court trap that uses a deep corner option to create some defensive indecision.

All in all, this is a great DVD for those looking to add weapons to your defensive arsenal. Learn how to make decisions when pressing that lead to turnovers, points, and, ultimately, wins. Rent this Full Court Pressure Defense DVD today.
