All Access Defensive Practice Plan with John Beilein After taking over as head coach of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, head coach John Beilein has allowed a series of “all-access” practice sessions to be released. With over 40 years of coaching experience, Coach Beilein has developed a style of defense that has suited his teams well. In this video taken while Beilein was at Michigan, you will get inside Beilein’s defensive system, see his preferred method of running the Shell Drill, and an effective late-game press and trapping system. Remember, all this comes from a coach who won coach of the year awards in three different conferences – Big Ten, CAA, and MAAC. Beilein won two Big Ten regular season titles, two Big Ten tournament championships, and reached the Final Four twice. It’s safe to say Coach Beilein knows a thing or two about basketball, specifically playing defense. Shell Drill, Ball Screens, Post Defense For Beilein, the Shell Drill is an opportunity to work on a number of defensive fundamentals. He will emphasize players getting into gaps to deny drivers and doing so with long, active hands that don’t drop below the shoulders. Players also get work on closeouts, rebounding with two hands, and dealing with cutters. Players transition to ball screen defense where Coach Beilein teaches technique on how to get through and around screens. He covers both high and side ball screens as well as post defense. Beilein covers the post defense before and after the ball is entered into the post and goes over the responsibility of the individual as well as the team. Press & Trapping System In late-game situations, Beilein likes to employ an aggressive trap to force ball handlers into making mistakes. You will see Coach Beilein teach players to get the primary trap in the full court before working to get a secondary trap in the half court if the initial trap is broken. One of the things you will notice is that Coach Beilein likes to keep things simple. He breaks down each drill and concept by demonstrating how he wants his players to move and act on the floor. You will pick up a good amount of Coach Beilein’s coaching philosophy as well as some great drills that you can use to enhance your defense. Rent this basketball defensive practice plan DVD today.

All Access Offensive Basketball Practice with John Beilein Get an inside look at the offense run by John Beilein while head coach at Michigan where he won two Big Ten regular season titles, two Big Ten tournament titles, and took the Wolverines to two Final Fours. After jumping to the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, Coach Beilein has made this practice video footage available for all to see. In the video, you will see Coach Beilein’s press break, shooting drills, out of bounds plays and even some of the team concepts that helped make the Wolverines successful. Great offensive basketball practice plan. Shooting, Transition & Post Play Coach Beilein is well known for his ability to take average shooters and make them long-range phenoms. You will see some of the shooting drills that Beilein has players do on a daily basis. The drills focus on the most important aspects of shooting which include footwork and upper body form. Next, Coach Beilein runs his team through a transition drill where players run through a weave and end using a jump stop. This leads right into post play. The ability to score consistently from the post can turn any offense into a great one. You will see drills that help post players score on the move. Coach Beilein stresses footwork and body placement to help post players increase their scoring percentage. Both catch high and finishing at the rim are stressed in this segment. Press Breaker Coach Beilein walks you through how he wants his players to break a press. He likes to be aggressive and take advantage of the press beating it down the floor in an attempt to create layups before the defense has a chance to set up in the half court. Coach Beilein emphasizes sharp cuts and keeping the right spacing as the keys to beating any press. Special Situations One of the situations Coach Beilein addresses is what to do when the offense has failed to create a quality scoring opportunity and the shot clock is running out. He shows them how to organize for a final ball screen in a late-shot clock situation. You will also see three out of bounds plays that can be used against man-to-man defenses. All three plays come out of the same alignment making it difficult for an opponent to decipher exactly what is going to happen. Coach Beilein is one of the game’s greats. John Beilein Culture and Drills Learn how to run a successful basketball program from one of the best in the business. John Beilein has coached at every level from high school to junior college to four-year colleges and now the NBA. The underlying factors of his success are simple – culture and drill work. This John Beilein Culture video provide you with an inside look at how Coach Beilein has built winners everywhere he has been. Change as a Constant Throughout a career that has seen Beilein win three different conference Coach of the Year awards (MAAC, CAA, and Big Ten), Coach Beilein has had to adapt and change as the game has changed. One of those changes is the emphasis of the pick and roll in today’s game. More of the practice focus must be centered on the pick and roll offense as well as how to defend it. Another change is in the area of strength training. Twenty years ago, players were not involved in the type of offseason training they are now. With the right strength program, players improve their strength, agility, and athleticism. One of the big changes Coach Beilein made in his defensive philosophy was the use of the zone defense. When he moved from one conference to another, it forced him to take a look at how he was defending opponents and what defenses would give his teams the ability to be competitive. Learn John Beilein Culture. Things That Don’t Change In building a championship program, some things never change. One is skill development. Players must be able to handle the basketball and shoot it. Those things will never change and Beilein emphasizes drills that improve both skills. You’ll see a two-player drill designed to improve ball handling and one-handed passing. The Double Mikan Drill is also demonstrated. Players do the traditional Mikan Drill but with two basketballs and shoot for making 20 layups in 20 seconds or less. Another drill is the 3 Taps and In where post players tap the ball off the backboard three times before tapping it in the basket. The final drill you will see is 60 in 5, a shooting drill where players attempt to shoot 85 shots in five minutes with a goal of making 60. Shooters move around the perimeter and never shoot from the same spot twice in a row. This is an excellent video that shows you how building a culture and focusing on the things that never change can help transform your program. Rent the John Beilen Culture DVD today.
