USA Basketball Practice Individual Breakdown The daily fundamentals are the building blocks of the USA basketball practice and these are taught during the individual post and perimeter breakdowns. The guards and the big guys will have to work on the designed actions of the offense when they are going through these practices. Well, the staff does a great job in teaching many things like the art of using the screen to attack the Kill Area of the floor and also keeping the defender off the line of the ball. The staff will also teach how to attack an aggressive hedge by the defense. There is a series of chair and shooting drills for the perimeter players. For the post players, the drop test series is being used. The jump hooks and the face up series are also used by the post players while they are attacking the basket with aggressiveness. Not only this, but they will also be working on a series of moves in order to enable them to score close the basket. Transition Offense & Offensive Drills The main focus of coach Showalter is on making the players play aggressively and strongly on each and every possession. He will also make the players focus on the amazing talent that they possess and he will help them unleash that talent with proper effort and drive to succeed at the highest of levels. There is a drill which is very useful in teaching you several important things like how to run the floor, how to create shots for everyone, the drill also focuses on communication amongst the players, and it also reinforces the importance of passing the ball. That drill is named The Hawkeye Shooting drill. Now when it comes to the 3-Man Fast Break drill and the Fast Break Cycle Work drill the coach Showalter will prepare the players in the best way possible which include physical and mental aspects. Man-to-Man: 20-Offense In order to attack the kill area of the floor, the USA team will make use of the wing pick and roll action. Now for the 20-offense the coach will give you a basic cover of the technique and will also see that the players must make coming off of the ball screens. Three of the more important things out of the 1-4 High Set are similar actions that will allow for post-up chances and the second is staggered screens and the last one is the false actions to occupy the defense. When the players will be on the floor, man-to-man offense will be focused in two separate scrimmages and this is how the offense begins to unfold. USA Basketball Practice Defensive Drills & Press Defense The USA coaching staff will also make the players realize the importance of separating themselves from the pack on the defensive end. Just to make that kind of mentality there are drills being applied to action for that purpose. When you are going through these practices sessions, there are different techniques and strategies being used to defend ball-screens, down screens, and flex screens are also covered and drilled in a 4-on-4 Shell Drill. He is a five-time recipient of USA Basketball’s Developmental Coach of the Year award. In this video, Coach Showalter shares some of his knowledge about building a positive team culture and he shows you a simple continuity offense and how it can take advantage of any zone defense. Developing Team Culture To build a winning culture, Coach Showalter begins his presentation with an explanation of the four Cs: culture, comfort, compete, and communication. Each of these must be practiced daily to develop a healthy culture and a sound program. In addition, Showalter shares 15 player standards to develop passion and enthusiasm for the program. You will also see a 4-high zone offense that uses screening action against the zone. Then, Coach Showalter demonstrates a zone set that is great to use after a timeout. Two post players are positioned on the same side of the floor with a back-pick and lob pass to get an easy scoring opportunity. Regardless of what type of zone offense you run, Coach Showalter shares eight points about zone defenses and how you can disguise your regular zone offense by using a double stack alignment. Using on-court demonstration, Coach Showalter takes you through the “20” continuity offense which begins in a 1-4 set and utilizes a ball screen on the wing to get players into what Showalter calls the kill area. Coach details what makes the ball screen offense work including how and where to set the ball screen and the screen and roll versus the screen and go. Players are taught to read defenses as the ball handler comes off of a screen. Coach Showalter emphasizes the correct reads for the various looks the offense might see. Full Court Trapping Defensive System by Don Showalter Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Don Showalter (Rental)-Full Court Trapping Defensive System $15.99
Don Showalter: Full-Court Trapping Defensive System Don Showalter is one of the winningest high school coaches of all-time. In 42 seasons, he recorded over 600 wins and has served as the Director of Coach Development for the USA Basketball Youth Division. Much of Showalter’s success was due to a pressure defense that disrupted the flow of opponent’s offenses. This video is a tutorial on how to apply a full-court trap, adjusting a press to match your players’ talents, and how to confuse an offense by matching their press break moves. Showalter recognizes the always changing skill levels of high school athletes. As a result, he created a simple press defense that can be adapted successfully to players of all skill levels. The bottom line is a defensive philosophy based on constant ball pressure, patience, and effective rebounding. Coach Showalter teaches players how to manage different press breaks. Using a few simple adjustments, players learn how most offenses try to get the ball to the middle. He also shows you how the press flows right into the 2-2-1 zone defense. In addition, you’ll see five drills that help players learn to play this defense. To counter the press, Showalter demonstrates two press breaks. The first involves putting your best shooter beyond the three-point arc. The other is a more conventional 4-across scheme that breaks the trap. Confuse your opponents and create chaos with a simple but effective full-court press. This is the same press that helped the U17 USA men’s basketball team with the 2010 FIBA world title.

Team Drills For Offensive Skill Development by Don Showalter Instructional Basketball Coaching Video
Don Showalter (Rental)-Team Drills For Offensive Skill Development $17.99
Team Drills for Offensive Skill Development Maximize your entire team’s skill development with over 20 drills from Don Showalter, long-time head coach at Iowa City (IA) High School. Showalter also served as coach of Team USA U16 and U17 national teams from 2009 to 2014 and won six gold medals. In this video, Coach Showalter shows coaches how to train players regardless of the facilities or limited coaching resources. You will see drills he used with the USA U16 and U17 national teams that will improve everything from dribbling and passing to screening and shooting. Footwork Drills All of Coach Showalter’s footwork drills begin with a warmup series and include the “Line Drill” series. The idea is to establish a strong base below the waist and ensure balance in an effort to create space against a defender. Coaches will see a full-court drill reminiscent of legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. Players work on the jump stop, pivots, getting open with a V-cut, a pullup jumper, securing the ball on a rebound, and tipping the ball with both hands. To maximize reps, Coach Showalter developed a series of 15 Line Drills that work on improving in different areas of the game. Players learn to make strong passes with their weak hand, for example. Three of the drills work on teaching players to set and use on-ball and off-ball screens. Shooting Drills Shooting technique is the focus of Oiler Shooting Series, Box Drills, and the 30-Second Drills. Players work on shooting from distance as well as finishing at the rim. The Oiler Drill teaches players to pull up and shoot under control from different spots on the floor. Players can also incorporate pivots, fakes, and more to vary the shots taken. The Box Drills teach players to use seven different yet effective scoring moves from the high post. The 30-Second Drills – there are six total – get players to compete and improve to new levels. The Superman Drill is one that trains players to aggressively chase rebounds and then be explosive at the rim. All of Coach Showalter’s concepts can be incorporated with the Cut Throat Drill from former NBA coach Dick Motta. Learn how to emphasize different offensive concepts while your players work on developing their skills in game-like competition. Coach Showalter’s video is great for any coach looking to improve his players’ basic fundamental basketball skills.
