Muffet McGraw: Notre Dame’s Offensive System
Coaches yearn to look inside the playbook of national championship coaches. That is exactly what you can do in this video as Muffet McGraw, head coach of the 2018 NCAA women’s national champion Notre Dame basketball team, provides an in-depth look at the Fighting Irish up-tempo offense. McGraw was the 2018 AP Coach of the Year, winning the award for the fourth time in her illustrious career. In this presentation, Coach McGraw shows you a series of drills designed to help your team play at a faster tempo. She takes you through multiple options in the Princeton offense using whiteboard diagrams and breakdown drills.
The Fast Break
Coach McGraw begins with the fast break and shares four different practice drills designed to help you refine your transition offense. Players work against the clock and have timed goals. The drills demand perfection at a high rate of speed. You will see your team improve their ability to make quicker outlet passes, throw more accurate advance passes, and finish more consistently with layups in transition.
Notre Dame’s transition offense is also broken down in a 4-on-4 drill to show you its quick-hitting actions. Coach McGraw shares a number of options in pistol action, drag ball screens, and high-low post feeds. To get player a bunch of pull-up jump shot reps, Coach McGraw shares the “Short Long” drill. It is a full-court drill that works the pull-up jumper in transition.
McGraw’s Version of the Princeton Offense
A big believer in the Princeton offense, McGraw shows you her version of the offense providing three options to deliver multiple scoring opportunities. The actions McGraw presents create backdoor looks and open jumpers off of different screens. McGraw shows you how each option flows into ball screens and high-low action for your post players.
In the practice session in this 60-minute video, you will see how you are able to focus on the details of each play in game-like 3-on-3 situations. Coach McGraw has built one of college basketball’s most efficient offenses. This is the opportunity for you to learn from one of the best in the business.
