The former Chicago Bulls head coach executed the biggest turnaround in Big 12 history when his Cyclones won 23 games in 2012 and beat the defending national champion in the NCAA tournament that season.
Hoiberg demonstrates 16 different drills that you can use to improve your team’s fundamental basketball skills. In this 62-minute video you will see practice footage containing:

- Five post breakdown drills
- Six guard breakdown drills
- One rebounding drill
- Two shooting drills
- One passing drill
- One transition build-up drill
Hoiberg uses these same baketball practice drills to build his players’ offensive and defensive skill sets as well as their overall court awareness. The breakout sessions for guards and posts help develop a strong repertoire of offensive moves. You will see Coach Hoiberg take the guards and posts through shooting drills that help players get shots up within the offense.
Basketball Practice Drills Key Points
In each offensive drill, Coach Hoiberg stresses spacing and court awareness. These skills take time to develop. You will see a number of two-player drills where Coach Hoiberg teaches pick-and-roll defense as well as contesting shots and rebounding.
Included in the live practice sessions is footage of some team drills. These include the Three-Man Weave, Speed Shooting, 4:15 Shooting, 3-on-3 Rebounding vs. Pads, and a Transition Build-Up drill. In all of his coaching stops, Hoiberg has stressed spacing and always being ready to shoot. This has helped his teams, especially Iowa State, be among the nation’s highest-scoring teams and best 3-point shooting teams.
