Frank Allocco: Skills and Drills for Building Hard-Nosed Half-Court Team Defense
Long-time California high school and University of San Francisco associate head coach Frank Allocco details for you how to build a tough, hard-nosed half-court defense that will suffocate opponents. Coach Alloco is the only coach in California high school history to win state titles with two different schools. He is second all-time in the state with a winning percentage of .868 and has earned numerous Coach of the Year honors.
In this 80-minute video, Coach Allocco walks you through the skills and drills that helped his defenses routinely allow less than 40 points per game including 2011-12 when his defense allowed just 34.48 points a game and that is with a shot clock. Coach Alloco preaches a “team first” approach to defense and it all starts with the basic fundamentals.
Tough, hard-nosed defense starts with the most basic element – the stance. Coach Allocco demonstrates his Form Drills which include the stance as well as drills to help your players build solid technique in on-ball defense, denial, help defense, and post stances. Each stance is taught and then Coach takes you through a series of drills designed to teach defenders to move their feet. Doing so helps defenders prevent easy drives through the lane and moving the feet makes them harder to screen.
Coach Allocco’s Form Drills progress to more game-like situation drills and address skills like closeouts, beating ball screens, and more. Shell Drills are used to teach the skills necessary to build a sound man-to-man defense. They also help players learn to communicate, which Coach believes is vital to winning basketball.
One of the best high school and college coaches in the business, Coach Allocco will give you a number of ideas that will help you shut down opponents using an aggressive team defense.
