A successful basketball season begins before the first ball is tipped. Your team will enjoy a better game and practice experience if you take the time to get organized before the season starts. Here are three things that you can do in advance to keep your team organized.
Utilize Technology to Help Make Your Job Easier
Savvy coaches understand the importance of leveraging technology to make the communication part of their job simple. Before the season starts, it is important that you have a plan about how you are going to communicate with your team. About 90 percent of text messages are read within three minutes, so sending a big group text may be an effective way to communicate with your team. There is also a host of sports-specific communication apps that are useful for keeping all of your important scheduling information in one place. Players, parents, and anyone involved with the team can use these apps to schedule events and track practices and game results.
Start Preparing for the Season in Advance
Even for the most experienced coach, the beginning of a new season can be overwhelming. You can avoid some of the stress by having a plan going into the start of the season. Having a plan in place for the first few practices will provide a solid framework for what is to come. Also, it will allow you to focus on meeting your new players and building the team chemistry during those first few weeks because you won't be distracted with the technicalities of planning each practice from scratch.
It takes more than just one coach to ensure a successful season. You can get your team off to the best possible start if you assemble your volunteer staff prior to the first practice. There can be many roles to fill, depending on the age level, size, and competitiveness of your team. Some key volunteer positions to consider putting together are assistant coach, team parent, social lead, scorekeeper, statistician, and videographer. Do not be shy about asking for help. You are only as strong as the team that surrounds you.
You will enjoy the first few weeks of the season more if you come into this time prepared. Getting organized and having a plan in place will allow you to focus on the smaller details of launching a successful season.
