Dwane Casey: Special Situations & Set Plays
Coaches will face numerous special situations throughout the course of a season. From end-of-half and end-of-game situations to the sideline out of bounds play, coaches must be prepared. Dwane Casey, head coach of the NBAs Detroit Pistons, teaches you over 10 set plays that have proven successful at the highest level of the game.
Coach Casey was the head coach of the Toronto Raptors before moving on to Detroit. He is the winningest coach in Raptors history and has an NBA title under his belt as an assistant with Dallas (2011). In this on-court presentation, Casey shows you the spacing and timing needed to get your shooters quality looks and how to counter anything a defense gives you to get a shot when you most need it.
Sideline Out-of-Bounds Plays
Casey presents five set plays each with multiple options to provide either a 2-point or 3-point shot attempt. Casey likes the inbounder to throw the entry pass with his weak hand to make sure that the play can work in any situation. He also teaches inbounders how to decoy players to draw attention away from the primary intention.
One of the plays was used by Toronto where players used a scissors action off a screener at the nail with the point guard starting in the backcourt. If needed, the ball can be inbounded to the backcourt. Three sideline plays are then demonstrated using back screens to catch a lob at the basket or a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer with little time left on the clock.
Endline Out-of-Bounds Plays
Coach Casey shows you how to break a press quickly when you have no timeouts left and then demonstrates five different plays from the baseline in a short-clock situation. He details the sequence of reads for players to get behind the 3-point arc using clean up (screen the screener) actions and flare screens.
Two of the plays use posts at the elbows. There are quick actions that can get them the ball diving to the basket in situations where less than a second remains on the clock. Coach Casey also provides detail on timing, angles of screens, counters, and footwork all to ensure you can execute his plays successfully.
For all of those special situations, Coach Casey provides you with several simple by effective plays that can help your players get shots in crucial situations.
