This video is designed with both the coach and player in mind. It contains drills that can be done with anywhere from one to four players. It emphasizes both offensive and defensive concepts important for playing the point guard position. Vital skills such as feeding the post, penetrating and pitching, decision making in transition, defending the perimeter player, denying the easy entry pass, and much more are included in this video. The video also includes the off the court skills needed to be a true leader for the team. Running Time: 75 Minutes

Overview

This DVD is for coaches and for players.  The belief is that the key to a great team is having a great point guard. Coaches are Will Rey and Ed Schilling.  The coaches teach the offensive and defensive side of each drill so you aren't just getting the offensive side of being a point guard but the defensive side as well.

This video is really for any level of player who is ready to be serious about playing the point.  We've seen other videos with college players who work on some of these drills regularly and teaching kids at a young age these concepts will get them ahead of other players.  Each chapter moves along quickly with good demonstration by the players and great explanation of the key teaching points.

Video Commentary

Coach Will Rey is talking about the 5 factors he believes a  coach needs to look at for a point guard or for a player, what they coach will be looking for.  This can serve as  checklist for you to start narrowing down who you might choose to be your point.

Coach Rey is goes over what makes a successful point guard.  What you need to be a point guard and be a successful point guard has been covered and now it’s on to the court.

The first drill is Up 2 Back 2.  Ed Schilling says if there were only 2 drills he could use for PGs, this would  be one of the 2.  It’s a great drill to change direction with your body and the basketball.

The Chill Drill is next.  This drill involves 6 different dribbling moves and a finishing move.   You could run your entire team through this drill and get a lot of dribbling move reps and finishes in.

1 on 1 Toughness - This drill teaches the offensive player to take control of the defense instead of vice versa.  You’ll work on rip throughs, pivots, and being tough off the dribble.  Another good drill that would benefit any player, not just a point guard.

1 on 1 Zig Zag -  This is your standard zig zag drill.  The coaches do a good job of pointing out the teaching points though.  The coaches are doing a really good job of teaching in the DVD.  They just aren’t going through the motions.

Zig Zag Beat Your Man - The drill is now live and not controlled.  Again good teaching points.  “Get to the other end of the court in as few dribbles as possible.”  This drill is also really good to show a player where there dribbling skills are.  Can they take the ball down the floor under pressure and at full speed?

1 on 1 Half to Full - This drill works on getting open against a full court denial press and then attacking that pressure.  Again, the coaches cover all the teaching points for both offense and defense.  This is a good drill to get an offensive player to transition to defense right away.

2 on 2 Guard Forward Entry - This drill will teach the point guard how to start the offense and hit the open player in that split second when they are open.  Good point about where to throw the ball to against pressure.

2 on 2 Draw & Kick - A great point guard must get assists and be able to set up teammates.  This drill will also teach the other guard to move without the ball.

2 on 2 Post Feed - This drill will teach your point to feed the post and use the toughness drills covered previously.  The PG will also learn to move after the pass is entered.  Post defense as well as how the PG should attack once the ball is entered into the post.  When the PG drives the post is taught where to move.  The PG will always know where to feed the post if stopped on the drive.

2 on 2 Pick & Roll - How to set up the screen and all the options are covered on how to attack after the screen is set.  The Defense key point is to “Destroy the Screen”  Live action is used in all the 2 on 2 drills.

2 on 2 Trap Passing - PG learns how to handle the trap and make the necessary passes. The teaching points are something all players really need to follow and don’t get enough practice doing.  This is probably a daily drill for anyone high school and below.

2 on 2 Pull Back & Pass - This drill covers how to handle the half court trap and not fold under pressure.  It’s a good drill because so many players pick up the ball when they should keep their dribble.

3 on 3 Screening-   This drill teaches the PG how to get involved in the offense - not just getting the offense started.

1/2 Sprint 2/1 Recovery - Work on getting the ball down the floor down vs. 2 defenders and then play 2 on 1 back.  Back 2 on1 he covers how to read the 1 defender and attack him.

Miscellaneous Concepts - Coach Ed talks about the intangibles that make a great point guard.

Conclusion

This DVD would be great for any coach to implement when you break down between guards & posts.  This DVD will give you a season’s worth of skills to work on with not only your point guards, but all your guards.

For the individual, this DVD will give you tons of teaching points to consider and learn from, as well as drills to work on.  Most of the drills will require a partner to get the maximum benefit though.

Hoops King recommends this video for any coach or player who wants to become a better point guard.  The only downside to this video is if you are an individual you are going to have to have a partner(s) to do most of the drills.  This is where it’s a better video for a coach.   A better individual DVD workout for a point guard is Jay Hernandez’ PG skills & drills.
